Windows/Ubuntu/OSX Smack Down…

I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time.  Like most people, I have been a Windows user since the days of Windows 3.0.  Ok, maybe not most users.  Going even further back, I can remember when my brother use to set up the old Commodore 64, and we use to code out the drawing of barns using BASIC.

10 Print FUCK OFF

20 GOTO 10

Look how funny we are.

That isn’t what this is all about.  If you followed my prior posts you have have seen that I stooped to the dregs of the OS world and picked up a MAC Mini.  I know I know, I would like the world to be taken over by Linux, but this move was 2 fold.  1) I have been tasked with developing a very specific iPhone app, and 2) Megan’s lab is a MAC shop.  Now I have the power to produce said app, and Meg can work from home.

This leaves me with a side project that I have been wanting to do.  A triple headed OS Smack Down.  I have several computers at my disposable (not as many as my brother – but at least the 3 I am  talking about – unless he has a MAC I don’t know of).  I run a Dell XPS M1330 dual booting into Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux, and of course the new MAC Mini running Snow Leopard.

The Windows OS I obviously use for work.  My programmers code in .NET, and we run MSSQL Server 2005-2008.  Windows is the obvious choice for compatibility.  And of course from years of MS Comfort my company runs XP & 7 (I finally got rid of all the Vista Business) and MS Office.  I still have some Office 2000 versions laying around.

Linux I have used on and off for fun, but I wish I could make my shop all Linux and OpenOffice.  With our push to pushing all our custom apps to the web, I am getting closer and closer to this goal.  Which would then push our IT costs down since we primarily only need to invest in hardware.

And of course the new MAC Mini which I have already discussed.

Let the games begin!
